CZECH FILM CENTER TO PRESENT UPCOMING FEATURE AND ANIMATED PROJECTS IN PLZEŇ Prague, April 21, 2008 - Czech Film Center will hold its annual Panel of upcoming feature and animated projects for the seventh year running at the 21st annual Finále Plzeň festival of Czech films. The presentation will take place on Friday, April 25th at 10:30 a.m. in Plzeň's Měšťanská beseda building. This year's mapping of upcoming films, conducted regularly by CFC, shows that a total of 70 Czech feature or animated films are in the works this year, which is ten more than in 2007. As in years past, the panel will present Czech feature and animated projects in various phases of completion. CFC will again publish a bilingual brochure containing information about these Czech projects presented at the panel that will serve year-round as a practical guide and source of information on what's keeping the Czech film scene busy these days. Of the 70 total upcoming Czech movies, the screenplays for 38 have been finished and 17 are in production and 15 in postproduction.Among the projects are 20 international coproductions. The subject matter and filmmaking approaches for the upcoming films are diverse. Alois Nebel, Tomáš Luňák's animated debut based on the comics of the same name by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99 will be shot using rotoscoping, a technique combining live-action film movement with animation, and Karel Janák's new film about teenagers, Ecstasy 2, will also be animated. A number of traumatizing moments in Czech history are being dealt with in contemporary cinema: Money from Hitler (Peníze od Hitlera based on the novel by Radka Denemarková) and Habermann's Mill (Habermannův mlýn, dir. Juraj Herz) shed light on the Sudeten German past, Lidice (based on Zdeňek Máhler's screenplay) depicts the leveling of small town by the Nazis, while Bonds that Tie (Pouta, dir. Radim Špaček) is set in the normalization period of the 1980s. A number of the projects are based on stories by well-known writers, e.g. K. H. Mácha (May/Máj režiséra F. A. Brabce), Tereza Boučková (An Earthy Paradise for the Eyes directed by Irena Pavlásková), Josef Kopta (Guard No. 47, dir. Filip Renč), Michal Viewegh (Shameless/Nestyda, dir. Jan Hřebejk) and Jáchym Topol's Sister (Sestra) directed by Vít Pancíř. Some of the filmmakers behind these projects will come to Plzeň to present their films in person, either with a trailer or excerpts of the film. The panel will be moderated by film critic Tomáš Baldýnský. The following representatives of major European film festivals have confirmed their attendance at this year's panel: Marcel Maiga from FilmFestival Cottbus, Robert Richter, advisor to the IFF in San Sebastian for Eastern Europe and Freddy Olsson for the Göteborg IFF, as well as other festival programmers, foreign producers and distributors.Once the event is over, the catalogue will be available for download on the Czech Film Center web site (www.filmcenter.cz).
