Gdynia Polish Film Festival Competition Spotlight: Miracle Seller
18 September 2009 By Katarzyna Grynienko
Directing duo Bolesław Pawica and Jarosław Szoda bring Miracle Seller, a contemporary road movie with a socio-political twist, to the Gdynia film festival competition section.

ImageMiracle Seller is a moving drama about an unusual friendship between two Dagestan childern who have escaped from the immigrant camp, and a Polish recovering alcoholic (and scheming criminal), who escorts them on an illigal journey trough Europe to get them to their father. The movie is a new take on issues of ethnicity and tolerance in contemporary Poland as well as an universal story about a human need of friendship and trust.

The filmmakers worked with a script written by Mitko Panov based on the idea of Grzegorz Łoszewski. Miracle Seller is produced by Fabryka-Spółka Realizatorów Filmowych i Telewizyjnych(www.fabryka.info), a company co-created by the two directors.

Image"The total budget of the film was 4.1 million PLN," Pawica told FNE. The movie received 1.7 million PLN for production financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl). Miracle Seller is a Polish-Swedish co-production with Polish Public Television (www.tvp.pl), Performance Marketing Group (www.performance.pl), Film i Väst ( www.filmivast.se)  and Republiken AB as co-producers.

Miracle Seller had its official premiere during this year's ERA NEW HORIZONS IFF in Wrocław, where is was very well recieved by the audience and the critics. The young actors Sofia Mietelica and Roman Golczuk were acknowledged for their fresh and natural performance. The leading role is played by Borys Szyc, a young Polish actor who also stars in three other Gdynia competition movies : Snow White and Russian Red, Case Unknown and Lesser Evil. His part in Miracle Seller was strongly praised after the premiere and called one of the most interesting dramatic roles of the last years.

Image"Stefan is a hero in a real sense of this word - he can make himself change. He has the strength and the faith to do it, although it does not seem like it at the beggining of the movie. The change to regain ones identity has a major but underappreaciated tradition in the Polish culture. Today the need for change is burning - maybe more then ever," the directors said in a joint statement.

The release of the film in Polish cinemas is planned for the late fall 2009.

FNE Ambassador for Poland

"For me its very very useful, I receive and read it every day. It is very useful to know what's going on in the region and it was previously an undiscovered area. FNE is doing a very good job. FNE informs us about not only film but also TV and production. Very often I am using some subjects from FNE in my TV programme"
