34. Polish Film Festival in Gdynia
Gdynia Polish Film Festival Competition Spotlight: Snow White And Russian Red
09 September 2009 By Krzysztof Kwiatkowski
Snow White And Russian Red, the second feature film from director Xawery Żuławski, is a screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by the young Polish author, Dorota Masłowska.

ImageThe author plays a part in the film, portraying a teenager who creates the world of her own book, i.e. the proper action of the film. The main hero is a primitive hooligan who is trying to put his life in order. Eccentric women appear in his life: a local beauty, a fan of Gothic metal loyal to her sub-culture, and a kind-hearted student of Polish literature. This is the modern Poland seen through the eyes of a young girl.

The main character is played by a leading young Polish actor, Borys Szyc. Szyc also appears in to other films in competitions at Gdynia: Miracle Seller from Jarosław Szkoda and Maciej Pawica and Enen from Feliks Falk.

The producer is Film Media S.A. ( www.filmmedia.com.pl), known primarily for action films. The budget amounted to PLN 4.1 million, with a PLN 2 million subsidy from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl). The shooting took place between May 6 and June 18, 2008, in Warsaw and in Gdańsk.

Snow White And Russian Red was distributed in Poland by ITI Cinema ( www.iticinema.com.pl) in 73 copies and attracted over 430,000 viewers. It also enjoyed sensational press reviews. It was presented at OFF Plus Camera Festival in Krakow, at Karlovy Vary, at Łagów, and at Tarnów. It won the main award of the Competition of New Polish Films at the Era New Horizons Festival in Wrocław.

Żuławski, the 37-year-old son of the well-known film-maker Andrzej Żuławski, previously directed Chaos.

Grazyna Torbicka
FNE Ambassador for Poland

"For me its very very useful, I receive and read it every day. It is very useful to know what's going on in the region and it was previously an undiscovered area. FNE is doing a very good job. FNE informs us about not only film but also TV and production. Very often I am using some subjects from FNE in my TV programme"
