Karlovy Vary East of the West: Lost Times
30 June 2009 By Gyorgy Karpati
First feature film director Aron Matyassy burst onto the Hungarian film scene, winning the Golden Reel Main Prize of the 40th Hungarian Film Week in February with his movie Lost Times.

Lost Times won not only the best film prize but also the best original music prize and the student jury's main prize. Local and international critics were in agreement with the jury.

Matyassy comes from a family of artists -- one brother is an actor and the other is a photographer. After beginning university studies in philosophy, the aspiring filmmaker was admitted to a directing programme notable for graduating impressive young directors such as Attila Gigor (The Investigator).

Lost Times is set in 1997 near the border in Eastern Hungary. The main character is a car mechanic who lives with his mentally handicapped sister. After his sister is raped by a stranger in the nearby forest, the ensuing police investigation leads nowhere and becomes a burden for the brother.

Lost Times was produced by Unio Film (www.uniofilm.hu) and lead producer Istvan Bodzsar. The 500,000 Euro budget includes 232.000 Euros support from the Motion Picture Public Foundation of Hungary (www.mmka.hu). Hungarian Public TV Channel MTV (www.mtv.hu) co-produced.

The film was shot during summer 2008, with a tight 23-day shoot schedule closely followed by postproduction work.

In Hungary the film will be distributed by Budapest Film Zrt. (www.budapestfilm.hu) with the Hungarian release planned for October. International sales are in negotiation. Following its East of the West screenings in Karlovy Vary, Lost Times is headed to 12 more film festivals worldwide.

Hungarian director and scriptwriter Judit Elek

I read Film New Europe every day. It provides very good information.  It’s very very useful. I don’t have time to read many magazines or journals. FNE is the best and if I read this I get all the necessary imformation. All the important news about what has happened is there in FNE. Especially what is happening in our own neighbourhood, in the neighbouring countries. I like FNE because you can find out where is the money and what the other filmmakers are making.  For me it’s very important."
