BUDAPEST: German sales agent The Match Factory (www.the-match-factory.com ) announced its acquisition of Just the Wind by Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf. The films, about a family of Roma (gypsies) living on the Hungarian plains who experience the effects of racism, was inspired by actual events that took place in Hungary in recent years.

Estonian Film Centennial Begins in Tartu

ImageTALLINN: The 100th anniversary of Estonian film launched on 6 January in Tartu, the birthplace of the first national film director Johannes Paasuke whose first documentary was the now-lost Utotchkin Flying in Tartu on April 14 and 15, 1912. Paasuke also directed the first Estonian feature film, The Parnu County Bear Hunt, in 1914. He was a major documentary of life in Estonia, both through on film and still photographs, many of which will be featured at the centennial events.

New World Wins Estonian Journalists Prize

ImageTALLINN: A documentary film, The New World (Uus Maailm) directed by Jaan Tootsen, has won the best film of 2011 prize from the Estonian Association of Film Journalists. Estonian public broadcaster EFF quoted leading film critic Jaan Ruus saying of the film, "It shows there is a need for something natural and completely earnest, and 'Uus Maailm' is a quest for an alternative lifestyle. We need that kind of idealism."

British Leonardo Project delegates pioneer new training programme

ImageWARSAW: A delegation of British graduates became the first ever to participate in an innovative new pilot project launched in Warsaw with funding from the European Union Leonardo Project.  The 14 strong group participated in the 2011 edition of the Watch Docs Human Rights Film Festival (www.watchdocs.com ) in Warsaw at the invitation of Anna Franklin general director of Film New Europe as well as meeting with key representatives of the Polish film industry.  The pilot project is the brainchild of Contented (www.contented.net) director Gerard Davies who plans to bring more groups of graduates to central and Eastern Europe throughout 2012.
