Latvian TV's Requests Cable Fee

RIGA: Commercial Latvian TV stations LNT and TV3 are asking cable TV operators to pay for there broadcasts of the commercials stations. Currently cable companies are able to broadcast the commercial national channels free of charge.

PRODUCTION: Four Suns in Postproduction

PRAGUE: Czech director and screenwriter Bohdan Slama is in the final stages of postproduction with the drama Four Suns, which is expected to be completed in early 2012 for a Czech release on 8 March 2012. The film has been selected to screen in competition at the Sundance Film Festival in late January.

Finnish Films Surpass 1.1 Million Admissions

Domestic films have taken 17% of the market share in Finnish cinemas, according to data released by Finnish distributors. As of the end of November 2011, admissions to Finnish films had reached 1.117 million.

Conference Ponders Future of Arthouse Cinemas

The international conference on film exhibition in Europe winds to a close in Paris on 7 December with a panel discussion on how European arthouse cinemas are preparing for the future. Participants include Greta Akcijonaite of Kino Pasaka in Vilnius and Tibor Biro of CINE-MIS in Miskolc, Hungary. Biro is currently featured on the FNE Europa Cinema of the Month profile.

Romania 2011 Country Profile

ImageBUCHAREST: The Romanian domestic film industry remained steady in 2011, while coproductions and foreign films were on the rise. The foreign interest in the Romanian films continues and national films again received numerous prizes in festivals and attracted distribution internationally, while new festivals emerged inside the borders. Despite the regulation that there be two calls for grants, in 2011 there was just one session of the production grant contest organized by the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro). However, many co-productions were shot in Romania in 2011 as well as foreign productions, including Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance the biggest American film shot in Romania since Cold Mountain (2002).
