FNE at Golden Rose FF 2012: Competition: Migration of the Belted Bonito Migration of the Belted Bonito by Lyudmil Todorov

VARNA: Bulgarian film critics called Migration of the Belted Bonito, written, directed and produced by Lyudmil Todorov, “one of the finest comedies of the newest Bulgarian cinema.” The film is one of 13 selected to screen in the national competition of the 2012 Golden Rose Film Festival.

The film tells the story of two close friends who make a comical journey from their modest village to the Black sea shore. Good-natured Raicho (Hristo Mutafchiev) constructed a kitschy Christian Cross; dreamy Simo (Stefan Valdobrev) drew two Orthodox icons. The friends want to sell the “pieces of art” to earn some money.

The film received a grant of 587,986 EUR from the Bulgarian National Film Center with (www.nfc.bg).

Shot entirely on locations in September and October 2010 and premiered at the 2012 Sofia Film Fest (www.siff.bg), the film was immediately praised by the press who called Todorov “one of the few real writers among the Bulgarian filmmakers.”

His earlier films (The Love Summer of a Shlepp, 1990 and Emilia’s Friends, 1997) dealt with the existential problems of his generation, while later, with Emigrants (2002) and Seamstresses (2007), Todorov became interested in younger characters living problematic lives in post-communist Bulgaria.

At the beginning of the year, Todorov publicly presented a Declaration against the “dictates of major distributers over the Bulgarian cinema.” As a consequence, he found he had to distribute the film himself, outside the networks of the biggest cinemas. Commercial TV channel Nova TV (www.novatv.bg) broadcast the film on 6 September 2012.
