Spectacular Increase for Bulgarian Films in the Local Chart

    SOFIA: Admissions and box office for domestic films increased in Bulgaria in 2016 for the first time in the last six years. Admissions to domestic films increased by 94.72 percent while the box office increased by 248 percent.

    Domestic admissions were 174,508 in 2016 compared to 89, 621 in 2015, while the box office for domestic films was 608, 697 EUR in 2016 compared to 174,637 EUR in 2015.

    A total of 257 films were distributed in Bulgaria in 2016, of which 17 were domestic films. In 2015 a total of 216 films were released in cinemas, of which 16 were domestic films.

    The most successful domestic film was Michaela Komitova’s debut feature 11th A Grade (Korund X) with 97,867 admissions and 367,529 EUR gross, followed by Ivailo Hristov’s Losers (Pro Film) with 25,530 admissions and 87,211 EUR gross, and Ivaylo Penchev’s Holiday Makers (Urban Media) with 18,374 admissions and 59,544 EUR gross.

    Total admissions in 2016 were 5,431,028 and total gross was 24.5m EUR, which doesn’t present much difference since 2015, when total admissions were 5,341,158 and total gross was 23.3 EUR. Total admissions increased in 2016 by 1.68 percent and total gross by 5.15 percent.

    The 2016 admissions top ten is topped by Ice Age: Collision Course with 290,721 admissions, followed by The Secret Life of Pets with 201,308 admissions, Zootopia with 195,926 admissions, The Angry Birds Movie with 163,910 admissions and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with 144,621 admissions.
