KARLOVY VARY: Petr Václav’s The Way Out / Cesta Ven, the most awarded Czech film of 2014, is one of the three case studies presented at the FNE Coproduction Event on Wednesday 8 July in Karlovy Vary.

The film received seven Czech Lions for best film, director, script, leading actress, cinematography, editing and sound, and four Czech Critics´ Awards for best film, director, screenwriter and leading actress. The film was also screened in the ACID section of the 2014 Cannes IFF.

The Way Out is a Czech/French coproduction of Moloko Film and Cinema Defacto (France), coproduced by the Czech Television and supported by the State Cinematography Fund, Czech Republic.

The film tells a story of a young Romani couple and how their efforts to live a decent and dignified life run up against the "Romani social trap" of racism, society's prejudices, exclusion from opportunities to obtain legal work, debts and miserable life conditions connected with the environment, lifestyle and traditional values of their ethnicity.

In the name of authenticity Petr Václav decided to cast Romani non-actors. The leading actress Klaudia Dudová was awarded both the Czech Critics´ Award and the Czech Lion for best leading actress. The DoP was Štěpán Kučera. Aero Films released the film in May 2014. The French company Premium Films is handling the international sales.
