FNE KVIFF Coproduction Event Case Study: The Magic Mountain

By

KARLOVY VARY: Anca Damian’s Magic Mountain screens in the main competition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this year.

Using the same mix of animation techniques from Crulic - The Path to Beyond (Aparte Film), Anca Damian heads with the second part of her trilogy on heroism into the life of Adam Jacek Winkler (1937-2002), a 20th century Polish Don Quixote.  The Magic Mountain is one of the three case studies to be presented at the FNE Coproduction Event on Wednesday 8 July in Karlovy Vary.

Adam Jacek Winkler was a photographer and a mountaineer who moved to Paris as a political refugee and fought as Adam Khan in Afghanistan on the side of the mujahideen in the 1980’s. He climbed Mont Blanc, leaving there a solidarity flag with the Afghan people and died while on another solitary climb. Anca Damian and Ania Winkler wrote the script.

Damian is producing through Aparte Film in coproduction with Benedicte Thomas and Guillaume de Seille through the Paris-based company Arizona Films Distribution, and Wlodek Matuszevski from the Polish production company Filmograf. The Romanian National Film Center (CNC)  gave the project a production grant of 95,000 EUR in April 2013. The Polish Film Institute (PISF) is also supporting the project with a production grant of 120,000 EUR.The budget is around 1m EUR.

The project was presented at Cartoon Movie in Lyon (5-7 March 2014). The Magic Mountain uses the photographic archive of Adam Jacek Winkler as well as his drawings and original shooting imitating the silent movies.

The animation is being created at the Romanian studios DSG and Abis Studio, and also in Poland. The animation and graphic team is composed of Theodore Ushev, Raluca Popa, Dan Panaitescu, Sergiu Negulici, DragoşŞtefan, and Tomek Ducki. The acclaimed Romanian-born London-based violonist and composer Alexander Balanescu wrote the score.
