PRODUCTION: Petr Nikolaev Prepares Film about Czechoslovak Legionnaires

By

PRAGUE: An important anniversary of Czechoslovak legionnaires inspired Czech director Petr Nikolaev to pay a tribute to them with an epic feature film. The Czechoslovak Legionnaires Community approached Petr Nikolaev after he directed a WWII film in 2011.

The biggest problem facing the project with the working title Legionaries – Siberian Anabasis at the moment is money. The project is financially quite demanding; the filmmakers estimate the budget at approximately 100 m CZK (3.7 m EUR). The producers are trying a wide range of financing sources including crowdfunding. The film is produced by Jiří Průša and Take One Take and it received funding from the State Cinematography Fund Czech Republic.

The filmmakers are using historical sources and collaboration with historians on the screenplay but the film, according to Nikoleav, will be a fiction feature film. The writer is Miroslav Očšatka and Zdeněk Mahler is the script editor. The shooting is planned for fall 2016, taking place primarily in the Czech Republic.
