FESTIVALS: Czech Animators Head to Annecy

    PRAGUE: An unprecedented number of 17 Czech filmmakers representing 11 companies and institutions are attending the 42nd edition of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, running through 16 June 2018.

    Three Czech films are part of the official programme. Jan Svankmajer’s Insects (Athanor, Czech TV) will be shown in the out of competion section Screening Events. The film received 412,000 EUR in support from the State Cinematography Fund. The short film After (University of West Bohemia) directed by Matouš Valchář will screen in the Graduation Films in Competition section, and the Czech/Slovak short film The End directed by David Stumpf and Michaela Mihalyiova has been selected for MIFA Pitches. The film is produced by bfilm and FAMU and has already received a grant of 22,000 EUR from the State Cinematography Fund. This is only the second time the Czech Film Center has participated in the festival and market.

    Several CEE countries are teaming up for representation under the CEE Hub at the Creative Europe MEDIA stand, in collaboration with Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia, among other countries.

    In a statement, Soon-Mi Peten, Head of Sector Promotion, Training and Festivals for MEDIA, said, "We are very happy to welcome the Central and East European Animation Industry to our stand – it is a first time for us to have a stand at MIFA and a first time for them both to be at MIFA collectively and to work with us in this way.”

    Animation has long been an important segment of the film industry in the Czech Republic. In 2017, the Czech Film Fund supported 23 animated projects in total with the amount of 1,780,627 EUR for development, production and minority coproduction.
