FNE at Zlin: Magic Tree wins Zlin festival

By Cathy Meils in Zlin
Central European films made a strong showing at the 50th anniversary edition of the Zlin International Film Festival for Children and Youth (www.zlinfest.cz), with Poland's Magic Tree by Andrzej Maleszk, based on the TV series of the same name, taking the
Golden Slipper for best film for children. Romania's Florin Serban won the best prize for European Debut for his film If I Want to Whiltle, I Whistle, and a second Polish director, Katarzyna Roslaniec, won the Visegrad prize for Mall Girls.

Over 100,000 visitors attended the festival's screenings both in Zlin and at satelite locations and on the festival's film train.

The anniversary edition, by far the most ambitious mounted by the festival and artistic director Petr Koliha, was praised for its especially vibrant sections presenting an overview of Czech and Slovak cinema for the past seven decades. In addtion, the festival mounted a tribute to Zlin legendary filmmaker Karel Zeman in honor of his centennial. Equally as popular for contemporary audiences was the festival's lifetime achievement award winner Zdenek Sverak.

Koliha, who serves on the board of the European Children's Film Association (ECFA, ), hosted a board meeting of the association -- the first such meeting in a Central/East European country, and a sign of the organization's new expansion into the territory as well as a tribute to the Czech Republic's exceedingly strong children's film industry.

While the festival programme was a remarkable celebration of the 50th anniversary, Koliha has demanding ambitions for the 2011 festival. He told FNE that the 50th anniversary is a good ending to one cycle of the festival. The next cycle will see Zlin pursuing more prestigious international films for its competition sections.
