Secrets and Empties split top Czech Lions awards

    Secrets by director Alice Nellis and Empties by Jan Svěrák split this year´s top awards at the Czech Lions ceremony, the Czech version of the Oscars. Secrets won Lions for best film and best cinematography, while Empties picked up awards for best director and best screenplay, plus a third Lion for best domestic audience.

    A total of 10 awards were handed out at the ceremony on Saturday (March 1) in Prague.

    Václav, a film by Jiří Vejdělek, won two awards from the Czech Film and Television Academy (www.cfta.cz), gaining a Lion for best actor in a leading role (for Ivan Trojan) and for the best actor in a supporting role (for Jan Budař).

    The big surprise of this year´s Czech film awards were three Lions for the Edith Piaf film, La Vie en Rose. This French-British-Czech co-production by director Olivier Dahan got trophies for the best actress in a leading role for Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard, and also for best sound and best music
