PRAGUE: Polish director Agnieszka Holland is preparing to direct a film on Jan Palach, who died of self-immolation during the Czechoslovak protests of 1969. The news was made public as the Czech Republic commemorated the anniversary of Palach’s death in January 1969.

Holland’s film will be the first film on the subject of a student who became an icon of Czech protests to the 1968 Russian invasion. Holland was a student at Prague’s FAMU film school (www.famu.cz) at the time, graduating in 1971. The film will be produced by HBO Central Europe (www.hbo-centraleurope.com).
