TALLINN: The portmanteau film How Far Is Europe/Moldova-Aproape-Departe, consisting of six short films directed by Pavel Cuzuioc, Dorian Boguţă, Valeriu Andriuţă, Ion Săpdaru, Igor Cobileanski and Dumitru Grosei, will be pitched at the Baltic Event during Black Nights FF (14-30 November) in Tallinn.

The project is in development, set for shooting in summer 2015.

The 20 min films are: Raisa, Vera, Salix Caprea, Postcards from Home, Fossil's Good Times and Sunflower Oil. The shorts of different genres together try to answer the question: How is the West perceived from the Republic of Moldova? The characters range from children whose parents are working in Spain, to farmers stressed out because goats eat goat willows just before the arrival of the American humanitarians who gave them the seeds, to a Geography teacher trying to convince the authorities of the existence of fossils of a dinosaur perceived by them as dangerous for the European Union.

All the filmmakers are Moldavian and all are directors except actor Ion Săpdaru. Dorian Boguţă started his career as an actor before moving to directing. Valeriu Andriuţă is an actor, stage director and playwriter. Săpdaru and Boguţă and living in Romania.

Brio Film Production, the Moldavian production company of Igor Cobileanski (The Unsaved) launched a script contest in early 2013. Sixty scripts were submitted. Cobileanski is producing with the Romanian producer Dan Burlac and the Moldova-born Vienna-based filmmaker/producer Paul Cuzuioc. Baltic Event is the first place where the project will be pitched. The team are looking for funding and coproducers. The project is in the fundraising stage with the shooting set for summer 2015 and the premiere for 2016. The budget is 300,000 EUR, Burlac told FNE.

Burlac will also give a presentation on the Moldova film industry at the Baltic Event on 26 November, together with Dumitru Marian, one of the initiators of the Film Law approved by the Parliament of Moldova recently.
