HBO Hungary eyes local film market as co-producer

By

With the aim of participating in future local productions, HBO Hungary is forging ties with Hungarian talent on a four-part mini series it will air later this month. The series, Natural Born Loser, is modeled after the popular Darwin Awards initiative, which ranks and awards (posthumously) those who die of freak accidents.

"It is important to note that, unlike other TV series in Hungary, ours was shot entirely on celluloid, indicative of the production quality our company intends to maintain," HBO's Laszlo Kiss told FNE, though he declined to disclose a budget figure for the series.

The cable channel hired young directors and screenwriters to create the comic series, which will display various low-life characters of Hungarian society, as well as high-brow models.

Following a long hiatus after How much is 30?, another show, Natural Born Loser marks the first piece of original programming HBO Hungary is offering viewers.

"We're inspecting the possibilities of taking part in Hungarian productions in the future," Kiss said. "We hope to announce new projects already some time in 2008."

He emphasized that HBO Hungary also tries to use corporate synergies by showing Hungarian films on HBO channels in other Eastern European countries.
