WARSAW: Jan Jakub Kolski will showcase his new drama, Polish/Czech coproduction Pardon, in the main competition of the 43rd Gdynia Film Festival, running from 17 to 22 September 2018.

"The story is set in 1946 and follows a married couple who travel through Poland with a casket containing the body of their 26-year-old son. They want to bury him in peace. I based this story on the life of my uncle Wacław Szewczyk, who was a ‘cursed soldier’. He was shot by the communist regime’s Secret Police (UB) and he could not get peace, as UB dug him out of the grave three times, and each time his parents wanted to give him a proper burial. So they travel to bury him where there is peace and quiet", Jan Jakub Kolski told FNE.

The cast includes Grażyna Błęcka-Kolska, the director's longtime collaborator and ex-wife, accompanied by Jan Jankowski and Michał Kaleta.

The film was produced by Centrala and the director's company Wytwórnia Doświadczalna, as well as the Czech company Mimesis Film, in coproduction with Sentimental, TVP, Subcarpathian Film Fund, Odra-Film, EC1 Łódź and Eurimages. The producers are Agnieszka Janowska and Paweł Kosuń.

The budget was 1.6 m EUR / 6.8 m PLN. The project received production funding of 594,851 EUR / 2.5 m PLN from the Polish Film Institute, minority coproduction funding of 187,230 EUR / 5 m CZK from the Czech Film Fund and 23,600 EUR / 100,000 PLN from the Łódź Film Fund.
