Polish Eagle for Stawiński

Polish scriptwriter and director Jerzy Stefan Stawiński will receive a Polish Eagle for Lifetime Achievement at the film industry's gala ceremony on March 1.

The selection was announced in Warsaw on February 24. The members of the Polish Film Academy (www.pnf.pl) decided to honor Stawiński as the author of several internationally recognized scripts such as Andrzej Munk's Eroica and Andrzej Wajda's Canal

Stawinski (born in 1921) was a law major at the Warsaw University when his academic career was stopped by the outbreak of WWII. A soldier of the Polish Home Army Army and a member of the Warsaw Uprising, a prisoner of the oflag till May 1945, he went on to fight with the Polish army forces in Italy and England. He started writing on 1949 as a translator and published his first novel titled Światlo we mgle (Light In The Dark) in 1952. From 1957 to 1965 he was the literary manager of the Kamera Film Unit and went on to become the artistic manager of the Panorama Film Unit and the Iluzjon Film Unit. He has been a member of the Polish Filmmakers Association (www.sfp.org.pl) since 1965 and headed its Script Author's Section between 1969 and 1974. 

He is known as one of the leading scriptwriters of the Polish Film School. He was awarded at San Sebastian and Mar Del Plata in 1959. His latest work was the script for Tomorrow We Go To The Cinema, a moving story about Polish high school graduates who had their youth cut short by the war. The television movie directed by Michal Kwieciński became one of the most popular features in Poland in 2007,
