KARLOVY VARY: Spanish film The Mosquito Net directed by Agusti Vila won the Grand Prix at the 45th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (www.kviff.com) but the majority of the prizes went the films from Central Europe and the Baltics. Oscar winning Czech director Jan Sverak won the special Jury Prize for his puppet film Kooky a departure from his previous work. The award for best director went to Croatian director Rajko Grlic for his Just Between Us another film striking out in a new direction for an experienced director who won numerous international awards for her previous film Border Post. The Polish film Mother Teresa of Cats directed by Pawel Sala split the Best Actor award between its two young start Mateusz Kościukiewicz and Filip Garbacz. The River directed by Lithuanian directors Julia Gruodiene and Rimantas Gruodis won best short doc and the top prize for the East of the West competition went to Romanian director Cristi Puiu for Aurora with a Special mention for Estonian film The Temptation of St Tony directed by Veiko Ounpuu. Star power was provided by a visit from Jude Law while Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov was honoured for his lifetime contribution to cinema. Sverak provided one of the lighter moments at the awards ceremony when he presented a Kooky puppet to Grand Jury President Ron Yerxa.
