PARIS: Films from Hungary, Romania and Croatia have all scored places in the Competition and Certain Regard official competition programmes in the 68th Cannes Film Festival running from 13 to 24 May.

Son of Saul by Hungarian László Nemes was selected for the Official Competition of Cannes Film Festival while new features by Romanian directors Corneliu Porumboiu and Radu Muntean, as well as by Dalibor Matanic from Croatia were selected for Un Certain Regard. The Czech film Retriever by Tomas Klein and Tomas Merta produced by FAMU Prague, was selected for Cinéfondation. The Directors Fortnight Night and Critics Week programmes are still to be announced.

The Son of Saul / Saul fia follows a Hungarian prisoner working as a member of a Sonderkommando at one of the Auschwitz crematoriums, as he tries to bury the corpse of a boy he takes for his son. The main characters are played by Géza Röhrig, Levente Molnár and Urs Rechn.

The Treasure/ Comoara tells a story of two friends who are digging for a treasure thought to be hidden for decades in the backyard. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote the script. The only professional actor in the cast is Toma Cuzin. Amateur actors Adrian Purcărescu and Cornel Cozmei were chosen after a three-month casting. Tudor Mircea is the DoP.

The High Sun/ /Zvizdan by Dalibor Matanic evolves over three decades in two neighbouring villages burdened by historical legacy.
