FNE at Venice 2015: Venice Film Festival Prize Winners

    VENICE: The Golden Lion for Best Film at the 72 Venice International Film Festival (2-12 September) went to Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas’ From Afar a story set in the run-down centre of Caracas. 

    It was a night of triumph for Latin America on the Lido with Argentinian director Pable Trapero picking up the Silver Lion for Best Director for his film The Clan and the Orizzonti Special Jury Prize going to Neon Bull by Brazil’s Gabriele Mascaro. The Special Jury Prize went to Turkish director Emin Alper for Frenzy, a film about modern-day Turkey with American films also picking up a number of awards.

    The FIPRESCI international critics awarded their top prizes to Sangue del mio sangue (Italy, France, Switzerland) directed by Marco Bellocchio in the main competition and in the parallel sections to Wednesday, May 9 (Iran) Orizzonti directed by Vahid Jalilvand. In the FNE FIPRESCI Critics an online poll of the full Venice programme organised by FNE and FIPRESCI the highest rating in the mian competition went to Anomalisa (USA) directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson.  The full poll can be found on the FNE website.

    The Venice Film Market headed by Pascal Diot marked its fourth year with a second successful edition of the European Gap Financing Market which presented 15 European projects which have secured at least 70% of their financial which is supported by Creative Europe MEDIA and the Venice Final Cut The Venice Film Market’s Final Cut in Venice workshop, which provides post-production support and partnership opportunities to films from Africa and the Arab world.  Winners are listed below.

    Another notable event during the Venice Film Festival was the screening of the LUX Prix of the European Parliament finalists. The First Vice-President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the President of the Committee on Culture and Education, Silvia Costa, (Click HERE for FNE TV interview) announced the three films selected to contend for the 2015 LUX Film Prize: Mediterranea by Jonas Carpignano (Italy, United States, Germany, France, Qatar), Mustang by Deniz Gamze Ergüven (France, Germany, Turkey, Qatar), and Urok (The Lesson) by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (Bulgaria, Greece) produced by Sofia based Abraxas Film.
