BERLIN: Milko Lazarov's Ága will have its world premiere in the Competition programme - Out of the competition at the 68th Berlin IFF, while the Slovak/Czech/Austrian coproduction The Interpreter directed by Martin Šulík, will have its world premiere in Berlinale Special at Kino International.

Ága aka Nanook tells the story of an aged couple living in their igloo in the old Inuit way. When their daughter comes back home from Europe, a clash between modern and old values breaks.

“I am interested in how these Eskimos, who survive in conditions unbearable for modern people, have succeeded in conserving the delicacy in their interpersonal relations and perceive life with smiles and sympathy,” Lazarov told FNE.

The film, which won the Krzysztof Kieślowski ScripTeast award, is a coproduction between Bulgaria’s Red Carpet, Germany’s 42Film, France’s Arizona Films Productions, the Bulgarian National Television and ZDF/Arte. It was supported by the Bulgarian National Film Center, French CNC and German MDM. Beta Cinema is handling the sales.

The acclaimed Slovak director Martin Šulík is returning, with The Interpreter / Tlmočník, to feature film after a break that started in 2011. The road movie starring Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel and Toni Erdmann actor Peter Simonischek follows two elderly men, who accidentally discover similarities between their families‘ tragic issues during WWII.

Šulík's company Titanic is producing together with Rudolf Biermann´s In Film. Coproduction partners are Austrian coop99, Slovak RTVS and Czech Television. The Slovak Audiovisual Fund and the Czech State Cinematography Fund are supporting.

The selection of Ága and The Interpreter was announced on 22 January 2018.
