13 August 2010 By FNE Staff

Essential Killing produced and directed by Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski has been selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 67th Venice Film Festival, taking place September 1- 10, 2010. The film is an Irish/Polish/Norwegian/Hungarian co-production and was shot in Poland, Israel and Norway.

Skolimowski co-wrote the script with Ewa Piaskowska. The film was produced by Skopia Film (www.skopiafilm.com), which produced Four Night with Anna, in cooperation with Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) and Canal + Cyfrowy (www.canalplus.pl), Ireland's Element Pictures, Cylinder Productions in Norway, Hungary's Mythberg Films (www.mythbergfilms.hu), and the support of Eurimages (www.coe.int/eurimages). HanWay Films (www.hanwayfilms.com) is handling international sales.

The film, starring Vincent Gallo and Emmanuelle Seigner, is a thriller about an Afghan man who is captured by Americans in Kabul and sent to a prison an unnamed European country. He escapes and is confronted with an unknown environment, surviving by killing whoever crosses his path.

Essential Killing will premiere in Venice on September 6 and is scheduled for a September 12 national premiere in Poland.
