Romania Introduces Digital TV Card

    BUCHAREST: Romania is the second CEE country to introduce a digital TV card, following the Czech Republic.

    This card based on the CI+ technology was introduced on 6 April 2012 by UPC Romania (www.upc.ro) for digital TV subscribers with compatible TV sets.

    The card allows for the reception of the digital channels including HD and 3D. The basic rate is 1.14 euros per month and the HD/3D rate is 3.43 euros. Digital cards have also been introduced in Switzerland, Germany, and Holland.

    UPC's digital TV rates range from 4.57 euro (TV Digital Optim) to 11.43 euro (TV Digital Maxim), and the mid-range 6.86 euro (TV Digital Familia), which is the company's bestseller.

    In 2011. UPC Romania had 1,142,600 clients for analog, digital and satelite (DTH) television. Subscribers have increased by 1.19% in 2012, growing in the digital sector by 67,800 and for the satellite broadcasting by 56,200, but decreased in the analog segment by 137,700 clients.
