PRODUCTION: Radu Mihaileanu’s The History of Love Moves to Romania

    BUCHAREST: After shooting one and a half months in Montréal and one week in New York, the English-language debut of the Romanian-born France-based filmmaker Radu Mihaileanu, The History of Love, moves to Romania starting 25 July 2015. 

    The two weeks of shooting will take place in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca. The adaptation of the bestseller by Nicole Kraus is a love story spanning 70 years. Derek Jacobi, Sophie Nélisse, Gemma Arterton and Elliott Gould are playing the main characters, but Romanian actors are also cast. Laurent Dailland is the DoP.

    The film is produced by Marc Antoine Robert and Xavier Rigault through France’s 2.4.7. Films in coproduction with Mihaileanu through Oï Oï Oï Productions and Tudor Giurgiu and Oana Giurgiu through Romania’s Libra Film.

    Tudor Giurgiu did not disclose the budget or the money spent in Romania but told FNE that the budget is several million EUR. According to IMDB, the estimated budget is 20m USD. The Romanian National Film Center (CNC) is supporting with approximately 292,000 EUR/1.3m RON.

    This is the first international production using Cluj as a location. Transilvania IFF, which was found by Cluj-born Tudor Giurgiu, recently stated the goal of creating an emerging film region in Transilvania.

    The premiere is set for 2016 with Wild Bunch handling the sales.
