15 screen multiplex arriving in megamall

By Iulia Blaga

A new multiplex with 15 screens will open in Bucharest on April 28, as part of Sun Plaza (www.sunplaza.ro), the biggest mall in Romania, which opened on February 25.

The multiplex with a total capacity of 3000 seats is the second Cinema City to open in Bucharest, after AFI Palace Cotroceni - Cinema City opening last October. The Cinema City in AFI Palace Cotroceni (www.aficotroceni.ro) has 21 cinemas, among them the first one with IMAX technology in Romania. The new Cinema City doesn't have IMAX, but will be welcomed by the biggest Romanian mall so far (some 210.000 square meters).

Cinema City (www.cinemacity.nl) is also running multiplexes in other Romanian towns including Iaşi, Timişoara, Cluj, Bacău and Piteşti. Cinema City International, the largest multiplexes operator in CEE and Israel, has multiplexes in Poland, Israel, Hungary, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Romania.

In 2009, 95% of the Romanian box office went to the multiplexes. Another multiplex is expected to open in 2010 in Arad.
