BUCHAREST: Romanian Emmy-winning director Alexander Nanau is in production with Totonel, a 90 minute documentary about the education of a 10 year old boy growing up in an ill-fated neighborhood in Bucharest. He started shooting in February 2011 and plans to wrap in April 2012.

Totonel (working title) is produced by Strada Film (www.stradafilm.ro) in co-production with Alexander Nanau Production. The producers are Marcian Lazăr and Alexander Nanau, and the executive producer is Bianca Oana. Nanau wrote the script and is also the DOP. Mircea Olteanu, who edited Nanau's former Emmy awarded doc, The World According to Ion B., will edit the material.

Totonel was one of the 57 projects chosen to pitch for funding at IDFA Forum in Amsterdam (www.idfa.nl/industry/markets-funding), and one of 20 chosen for Central Pitch in November 2011.

The project is partially supported through a film grant given by Policy Center for Roma and Minorities (www.policycenter.eu). After IDFA it attracted interest from the following TV channels:  YLE- Finland (http://yle.fi), RTS- Switzerland (www.rtsentreprise.ch), TVO- Canada (ww3.tvo.org), YES Doc - Israel. MDR-Germany (www.mdr.de), SVT-Sweden (http://svt.se/2.7830/about_svt) and RAI-Italy (www.rai.it).

The budget is around 200,000 Euro, Bianca Oana told FNE. Totonel is scheduled to be completed in September 2012, with the premiere dependent upon festival selection. Outlook Films (www.autlookfilms.com) is handling the international sales.

Nanau won an International Emmy for The World According to Ion B. /Lumea văzută de Ion B. in 2010.
