PRODUCTION: Confidant in Final Postproduction

By Dominika Uhríková

BRATISLAVA: Slovak director Juraj Nvota (Muzika) has completed editing of the Slovak-Czech-Polish coproduction Confidant, scriptwriter and producer Ľubomír Slivka told FNE.

The 102-minute tragicomedy set in 1960's communist Czechoslovakia had a four-season, 40-day shoot between August 2010 and July 2011. Confidant tells the true story of a young airport radio operator who is transferred to the Interior Ministry to become a phone-tapper, before finding out that his own phone is being tapped.

"Confidant is supposed to be a warning for those who, by ignoring their own history, put themselves at risk of reliving it," Slivka said. "I am convinced that, through both its content and narrative techniques, the movie will also be of interest for viewers outside the territory of what used to be the common state of Czechs and Slovaks."

The €1,700,000 film is co-produced by Slovakia's Attack Film (www.attackfilm.sk), Slovak Television (www.stv.sk), Czech Republic'sMaxiFilm&TV (www.mediatrust.cz), and Poland's Apple Film Production (www.applefilm.pl). The producers received €440,700 from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund (www.avf.sk), €205,000 (CZK 5 million) from the State Fund for the Support and Development of Czech Cinema (www.mkcr.cz), and €121,000 (PLN 500,000) from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl).

The lead roles are played by Czech actor Jiří Mádl (Snowboarders; Bathory) and debuting Slovak actress Michaela Majerníková, and the film also features performances by Ondřej Vetchý (Dark Blue World), Ady Hajdu (Mosquitos' Tango) and Táňa Pauhofová (My Husband's Women). The photography is directed by Ján Malíř, a renowned Czech cinematographer whose credits include Pupendo and Oscar nominee Divided We Fall.

The first copy should be ready by December 2011, Slivka said.
