Slovakia Abolishes TV Fees

By FNE Staff

BRATISLAVA: A bill that will end the TV license fee for TV households has passed a vote in the Slovak Parliament. The TV license fee will be abolished beginning in 2013.

Slovak households now pay a monthly TV license fee of 4.64 Euros per month. The fee is used to support Slovakia's public broadcasting station. In future, public broadcasting's budget will come from the state budget at a guaranteed minimum of 90 million Euros. An earlier attempt to pass the law failed in 2010.

The bill now goes to the President for signing. Analysts say that even if there is a presidential veto, the parliament would be able to block the veto
