BRATISLAVA: Fledgling Slovak director Lukáš Hanulák
and award-winning scriptwriter Hana Cielová (The Sixth Sentence) are
co-writing the first draft of Piargy:
Antichrist Reborn, a feature based on a short story by Slovak 20th
century writer František Švantner.
Set in a small mountain village on the Slovak-Polish border in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the mysterious drama reflects on human suffering and is a metaphorical allusion to the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah. "There is
no leading character; rather, the film will be a mosaic of multiple fates and
various bizarre characters," Hanulák told FNE. "Therefore, we are planning to
assemble a large, very international cast of actors, mainly from Poland, the
Czech Republic and Slovakia." Piargy is produced by Hanulák's own Big Bang Creative (www.bigbangcreative.eu) and co-produced by Slovakia's Arina (www.arinafilm.sk), Poland's Neseser (www.neseser.net) and the Czech Republic's Luxor (www.luxorfilm.cz). The authors are now looking for further partners in Hungary and Germany. With the production not expected to kick off until 2012, and with the shooting planned to take place over 12 months, no tentative budget for the project has been set yet. The director stated that important savings would be gained by filming in a digital format and having the post-production done abroad, adding that he will apply for a grant from the European Commission's Media (ec.europa.eu/media) as well as from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund (www.avf.sk).
