Ivan is a contemporary story set in Slovenia, which could have taken place anywhere. After a young woman Mara gives birth to Ivan, a chain of unexpected events begins. Ivan’s father, a married businessman, whom Mara obsessively loves, is missing. When she finds out that he is accused of a white-collar crime, she gets brutally beaten by his wife’s cronies. They manage to get together, but Mara finds herself in an impossible situation when she has to choose between her lover and her child.
“The film is a rough and thrilling personal drama set in a background of corruption, a drama of making the wrong choices”, director Janez Burger told FNE. The film was shot in Slovenia and Italy (Bolzano) in October-November 2015.
Ivan was produced by Miha Černec through Staragara in coproduction with Boris T. Matić through the Croatian Propeler Film, RTV Slovenija and Tramal Films with a budget of 1,460,000 EUR. The project was supported by the Slovenian Film Center (with 575,000 EUR), FS Viba, the Croatian Audiovisual Center and Eurimages.
The film will be released in Slovenian cinemas by Fivia.
