Slovenia’s film production remains fairly stable despite less impressive overall results. Due to the economic situation and some changes in the exhibition and distribution sector a decline of some 30% in attendance is expected.

FNE spoke to the young Latvian producer and director Andris Gauja of The Lesson about how the new generation of Latvian filmmakers are using crowd funding, pitching sessions and other innovative tools to put films from small countries on the international map.

The Lithuanian film industry noted several recent successes with films selected for major festivals that found favour at the local box office and with the announcement that 23-year old Lithuanian actress Aistė Diržiūtė had been selected as one of the EFP Shooting Stars of 2015. The foreign film servicing industry continues to do well.

Slovakia continues to find success internationally, powered by its documentary film production and more recently by genre-bending feature film productions informed by documentary techniques, with a pair of female directors receiving the lion’s share of laurels over the past year.

BRATISLAVA: Slovak writer/director Martin Repka is completing the third draft of the Slovak/Czech film The Tatooist with cowriter Agda Bavi Pain as the film prepares to move into the financing phase in 2015.

Estonia’s film year 2014 was highlighted by the opening of a significant number of new multi-screen and digital cinemas, growing admission figures, and the establishment of the second regional film fund for incoming productions. The year ended on the high note when the Estonian-Georgian film Tangerines (Allfilm) was nominated for the Golden Globes best foreign language film, a first ever for the country.
