LJUBLJANA: The Slovenian/Croatian drama Ivan directed by Janez Burger is Slovenia’s official entry for the US Academy Awards in the Foreign Language Film category.
When a young woman Mara gives birth to Ivan, a chain of unexpected events begins. Ivan’s father, a married businessman, whom Mara obsessively loves, is missing. When she finds out that he is accused of a white-collar crime, she gets brutally beaten by his wife’s cronies. They manage to get together, but Mara finds herself in an impossible situation when she has to choose between her lover and her child.
“The film is a rough and thrilling personal drama set in a background of corruption, a drama about making the wrong choices”, Janez Burger told FNE.
Ivan was produced by Miha Černec through Staragara in coproduction with Boris T. Matić through the Croatian Propeler Film, RTV Slovenija and Tramal Films. The project was supported by the Slovenian Film Center, FS Viba, the Croatian Audiovisual Center and Eurimages.
