By

The Lithuanian Governmental Strategic Planning Committee has endorsed the idea of creating a big budget historical epic about the Battle of Grunwald entitled Zalgiris - the Day of Iron. The film is budgeted at around €5 million (17 million Litas).

According an official press release of Lithuanian government, the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture and the Lithuanian Ministry of Finance will discuss sponsorship of the film in preparing governmental bills for 2009 and 2010. The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been asked to negotiate with potential co-producers from Poland, Russia, Belarus, Germany and the Ukraine.

The historical epic will mark the commemoration of the millenium of the name of Lithuania and the 600th anniversary of the battle of Grunwald. Zalgiris, otherwise known as the battle of Grunwald, took place on July 15, 1410, and was one of the greatest battles of medieval Europe. It ended with the victory of the joint Lithuanian-Polish army against the Teutonic Order.

The film will be directed by Raimundas Banionis. The script authors are Juozas Marcinkevicius and Marius Daskus. The historical consultant is Rimvydas Petrauskas, and film consultants are Marijonas Giedrys and Vytautas Vilimas.

The film is expected to screen on July 2010.
