FNE at Venice 2018: Venice Film Festival Prize Winners: Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma Wins Golden Lion

    VENICE: Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón was awarded the top prize for his film Roma in the main competition of the 75th Venice Film Festival, which took place from 29 August to 8 September 2018. Romania, Bulgaria and Poland scored as coproducers of prize winning films.

    French director Jacques Audiard was awarded Best Director for The Sisters Brothers a coproduction with United States/France/Romania/Spain. The film was shot mainly on location in Spain with the interiors shot in Romania.  Cristian Mungiu’s Mobra Film was the Romanian coproducer.*

    In the Orizzonti competition the Best Director prize went to the Kazakh director Emir Baigazin for The River, a Kazakhstan/Poland/Norway/Netherlands coproduction. The Announcement, a Turkish/Bulgarian coproduction directed by Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun, received the Special Jury Prize.

    The international critics organisation FIPRESCI gave its top award for Best Film in the Main Competition to Sunset (Hungary) directed by László Nemes and the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film in the Orizzonti and Parallel Sections went to Still Recording directed by Saeed Al Batal and Ghiath Ayoub.
