PRODUCTION: Răzvan Rădulescu debuts with First Of All, Felicia

By Iulia Blaga

Răzvan Rădulescu makes his feature film directing debut with First Of All, Felicia (Felicia, înainte de toate), co-directed by Dutch director Melissa de Raaf.

Rădulescu previously co-wrote scripts with Cristi Puiu and Radu Muntean for films directed by Cristi Puiu (Stuff And Dough), Radu Muntean (The Paper Will Be Blue, Boogie, Tuesday After Christmas) and Lucian Pintilie (Nicky and Flo), and directed the short film Networking Friday.

First Of All, Felicia is a contemporary story about a woman in her forties who has lived in Holland for almost 20 years, and comes to visit her family in Romania twice a year. When she misses a flight from Bucharest to Amsterdam, it opens up old wounds of miscommunication, lack of empathy and disruption. Rădulescu said that he wanted to direct a film on a personal topic: somebody living between two countries, and carrying a double complex - one of superiority, the other of inferiority - but he also wanted to make a film about time, while de Raaf points out the difficulties some people have in correctly reading loving gestures.

Rădulescu studied literature and opera directing. He wrote two praised novels and currently teaches in Germany. De Raaf is an independent curator of experimental film programs and exhibitions in the Netherlands, Germany and Russia.

First Of All, Felicia is produced by Ada Solomon and co-produced by Philippe Avril, Ankica Juric Tilic, and Jean-Yves Roubin. The production company is the Romanian Hi Film Productions (www.hifilm.ro), in co-production with the French company Unlimited, the Belgian FraKas Productions (www.frakas.be), the Croatian Kinorama (www.kinorama.hr), and ARTE France (www.artefrance.fr). The film was also made with the support of the Romanian Centre for Cinema (www.cnccinema.abt.ro), the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (www.havc.hr), Clir Media (www.clirmedia.ro), and Anonimul Foundation (www.anonimul.ro) and with the participation of HBO Romania (www.hbo.ro). The project received the CineLink Goteborg Film Festival Fund Award and was presented at Cinefondation Atelier in Cannes.
