By Iulia Blaga

BUCHAREST: The Romanian filmmaker Radu Gabrea plans to begin preproduction in January 2011 on his long docu-drama The Last Days of Ceauşescu based on the script written by Grigore Cartianu, editor-in-chief at Adevărul daily and the author of the book The End of the Ceauşescus/Sfârşitul Ceauşeştilor.

The project received a grant of 16,200 euro from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) this year, but after contesting the results it got 28,000 euro, the director told FNE. The budget is high for a documentary, 46,500 euro (2,000,000 RON). The film is produced by Tudor Şerban and Orion Film. There is co-production interest from Germany and Austria. Romanian public television (www.tvr.ro) and an unnamed advertising agency are also supporting the film.

The characters of Nicolae and Elena Ceauşescu will be played by the Romanian actors Constantin Cojocaru and Victoria Cociaş, who previously played the couple in a stage play.

Gabrea plans to use the subjective point of view of the two characters. Shooting are expected to start in February 2011, with 12-day schedule for the recreated scenes, and another 48 days for interviews with 30-40 people. The DOP is Alexandru Macarie. The premiere is set for 2012.
