RIGA: Acclaimed director Ivars Zviedris is currently working on a new project Loggers / Zāģeri, a documentary about the communities of Latvian forest workers.

The 21st century marks a specific breakpoint for one of the oldest and most challenging professions in Latvian history. Loggers will reveal what a man can do and what technology cannot. Zviedris says that his film will be “a portrait of Latvian forest workers as well as an expression of gratitude for the opportunity to live in one of the world’s greenest countries. Loggers will tell its story through humor, pain and these little dreams of a simple man.”

Ivars Zviedris is collaborating with Latvian director and playwright Andris Kalnozols who wrote the script. As in his previous projects, Zviedris is also the cinematographer and producer through Dokumentālists Studio.

The film is co-financed by State Culture Capital Foundation and National Film Centre of Latvia. It received a production grant of 14,700 EUR for the first stage of production, but more financing is needed.

The score is being composed by widely successful Latvian composer Jēkabs Nīmanis. The editor is Zviedris’ longtime partner Inese Kļava, with whom he shared Best Documentary Award at the Latvian National Film Festival The Great Christopher/Lielais Kristaps in 2012 for Documentarian.

Shooting started in the summer of 2015 and will wrap in the autumn of 2016 with the premiere set for 2017.
