Romanian Day at Berlin Film Festival

    On February 11, 2015, two Romanian films included in the official selection at the Berlin Film Festival will have their gala premieres: Aferim!, directed by Radu Jude, will be screened in the Competition, and Why Me?, by Tudor Giurgiu, in Panorama Special. The same day, the teams of the two films will meet the journalists in press conferences and will walk the red carpet of the 65th edition of the festival.

    Aferim! is a historical movie placed in XIX century Wallachia (Tara Romaneasca). In search of a fugitive Gypsy slave (Cuzin Toma), a policeman (Teodor Corban) and his son (Mihail Comanoiu) ride through the rural countryside meeting hundreds of characters. The press conference will take place at 11.00 AM at the Hyatt, and the official premiere will begin at 4.00 PM, at Berlinale Palast. Producer Ada Solomon, actors Teodor Corban, Toma Cuzin, Alberto Dinache, Alexandru Dabija, scriptwriter Florin Lazarescu, editor Catalin Cristutiu, costume designer Dana Alina Paparuz and production designer Augustina Stanciu are among those to attend the ceremony.

    Aferim!is handled internationally by Beta Cinema and will be released in Romanian cinemas in March.

    One of the most anticipated Romanian films in 2015, Why Me? is a political thriller inspired by the real case of prosecutor Cristian Panait, who committed suicide in 2002, at 29 years old, while working on a case involving another prosecutor. On February 11, at 11:45 AM, director Tudor Giurgiu and part of the team will meet the international media during a press conference streamed online on www.berlinale.de. They will be attending the gala screening at Kino International, from 7.30 PM.

    Actors Emilian Oprea, Mihai Constantin, Andreea Vasile, Sore Mihalache, Liviu Pintileasa, Alin Florea and Mihai Smarandache will be present at the premiere, along with Tudor Giurgiu, co-writer Loredana Novak, producer Oana Giurgiu, executive producer Bogdan Craciun, editor Lemhenyi Reka, costume designer Andrea Szelyes, sound-designers Florin Tabacaru and Alexandru Dumitru, assistant director Adriana Itu.

    Why Me? has already been acquired by Heretic Outreach. The film will be released in theatres across Romania on February 27, 2015.

    For the 8th consecutive year, Romania has its own stand in the European Film Market. Organized by the Romanian National Film Centre, the stand aims to promote Romanian cinema internationally and to provide the festival guests and the market professionals with relevant news concerning the activities of the Romanian film industry while, at the same time, supports the interaction between Romanian and foreign filmmakers. The new Romanian Films catalogue, which brings together all the Romanian feature films and documentaries which premiered domestically in 2014 or which are about to be launched in 2015 can be found at the stand or downloaded from here.

    The stand can be visited daily during the festival, between 10.00 AM and 6.00 PM.

    A number of recent Romanian films are looking for agents or distributors in the EFM: 03.ByPass (directed by Nap Toader), Bucharest Non-Stop (directed by Dan Chişu), Why Me? (directed by Tudor Giurgiu), Another Love Building (directed by Iulia Rugină) 2+2 (directed by Thomas Ciulei), Padurea (by Sinisa Dragin).

    Five young Romanian filmmakers were selected for Berlinale Talent program: female directors Ruxandra Ghiţescu, Natalia Saufert and Cristina Groşan, editor and producer Laszlo Istvan Dunai Ioana Draghici.

    Another Romanian, actor George Pistereanu (If I Want to Whistle I Whistle), is starring in the Irish feature film You’re Ugly Too, directed by Mark Noonan. The movie was selected to compete in the Generation KPlus section”.

    Same as every year, the guests can meet with their Romanian counterparts and enjoy a glass of good Romanian wine at a cocktail party, on 11th of February.
