“Brotherhood” wins the 2019 edition of When East Meets West

    The Czech project “Brotherhood” is the winner of the ninth edition of When East Meets West. The project directed by Francesco Montagner and produced by Pavla Janouskova Kubeckova (Nutprodukce) is the story of three adolescent sons of a radical Salafi preacher, facing their father's sentence for terrorism, questioning their believes and seeking different paths for their future.

    The international WEMW jury consisting of general manager of Cinéfondation Georges Goldernstern, Slovakian filmmaker Peter Kerekes, ZDF’s Simon Ofenloch and director of ACE Jacobine van der Vloed honoured Brotherhood with the Film Centre Serbia Development Award (5.000 EUR cash prize) as the best of the 22 projects in competition.

    For the third consecutive year the European Women’s Audiovisual Network comes back to Trieste and gives the EWA Network Best Woman Director Award to Floor van der Meulen, director of the Dutch project Methusalem.

    Thanks to the partnership with our international network of training programmes and markets, Slovakian producer Jakub Viktorin (Victim) received a scholarship for the participation in the EAVE European Producers Workshop whilst producers Magalie Dierick (All-In, Belgium) and Derk-Jan Warrink, (Methusalem, Netherland) will have a free accreditation to the Cannes Marche du Film Producer’s Network.

    Futhermore, the Flow Postproduction Award, prize of 15.000 EUR in post-production facilities, goes to the Slovak project Victim produced by Jakub Viktorin (Nutprodukcia) and directed by Michal Blasko, whilst the Polish project Her/His will be offered a complete marketing package thanks to the Asterisk Visual Marketing Award.

    Lastly, five prizes have been granted for the two sidebar sessions targeting films in the post production phase. The jury of Last Stop Trieste made up of Dorota Lech (Hot Docs), Aleksandar Govedarica (Syndicado) and Jenny Westergård (YLE Finnish Broadcasting) has delivered the HBO Europe Award, Flow Digital Cinema Award and the brand new Film Centre Serbia LST Award to the Ukrainian documentary Heat Singers whereas the Dox Consulting Award goes to the project Never Whistle Alone.

    The international jury of This is IT, the work in progress session dedicated to fiction films and hybrid works produced or co-produced by Italian producers, including Graziella Bildesheim (MAIA Workshops/EFA), Ilaria Gomarasca (Pyramide International) and Angela Prudenzi (Venice International Film Festival) gave a special mention to the film Paradise by Davide Del Degan and granted the Italian/Mexican film Tony Driver by Ascanio Petrini with the Laser Film Award.

    Last but not least, the brand new Italy-Baltic Development Award for Co-Production, cash prize of EUR 30.000, has been delivered by MiBAC-Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, Estonian Film Institute, Lithuanian Film Centre, National Film Centre of Latvia to “ULTRAMONDO”, a Lithuanian/Italian Fiction film for young audience coproduced by SOLARIA FILM (Italy) and FRALITA Films (Lithuania) and to “Searching for Antigravity” co-developed by Studio Nominum (Lithuania), Giuma Produzioni (Italy), VFS Films (Latvia), Les Films Figures Libres (France).

    The ninth edition of WEMW ends with a series of impressive numbers: 22 projects selected for the co-production forum, 13 films in the work in progress sections, more than 350 submissions, over 45 different countries represented, 200 international decision makers, 500 registered participants and more than 600 scheduled one-to-one meetings.
