GRANTS: Bulgaria Announces First Production Grants for 2018

    SOFIA: The Bulgarian National Film Center (NFC) distributed 1,801,900 EUR / 3,530,000 BGN at its first session in 2018. Nine feature films, including two with higher budgets and two with lower budgets, two debut features and three short films received production funding. Eight projects received development funding.

    The amount of 1,082,200 EUR / 2,120,000 BGN will be split between Uncle Christmas, directed by Ivailo Penchev and produced by Cinemaq, and Into the Heart of the Machinе, directed by Martin Makariev and produced by Forward Pictures.

    Two low budget films will share 377,732 EUR / 740,000 BGN - The Platform, directed by actor/producer Nikolay Mutafchiev and produced by Premier Studio Plus, and Farewell, Johnny, directed by Konstantin Burov and produced by Doli Media Studion.

    Short films received a total of 76,567 EUR / 150,000 BGN, while 71,462 EUR / 140,000 BNG will go to script development.

    Since 1 January 2018 NFC is not allowed to sign agreements with producers before the state film aid scheme is brought in line with the European Commission Communication on State Aid for Films and Other Audiovisual Works (2013/C 332/01). The decision of the selection committee will go into force only after the completion of all legal procedures. For the moment, no official date has been announced.    

    The grants were announced on 29 June 2018.
