FNE at Jihlava IDFF Emerging Producers 2013: Pavlína Kalandrova

By

FNE interviews Czech documentary producer Pavlína Kalandrova, selected to participate in the 2013 Emerging Producers workshop at the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival.

    1. What are your hopes and expectations from Emerging Producers?

I expect to find out about new and interesting ideas, to meet international colleagues who have similar types of activities and skills to produce documentary films and a similar state of development of their personalities as producers, but a different approach to their work and different ideas.

    2. What are YOU bringing to Emerging Producers?

My spirited self and demanding topics from the realms of the arts, society and philosophy.

    3. What is the position of documentary film in your country?

Still quite well supported and admired by the audience. In the last 10 years documentary film making is the stronger, more alive part of the Czech cinema production – compared to feature fiction films – I think more interesting in the topics and the style and quality of work, and more exciting.

    4. What are the coproduction possibilities for documentary producers in your country?

Two televisions are open to coproductions, which is great: the public broadcaster Czech Television and HBO Central Europe. Depending on the project, some postproduction service companies are ready to support films with material coproduction input.

    5. What are your thoughts on the system of funding of documentary films today?

I'm afraid that although we have a good new film law, there is little money in the State Fund for Cinematography. In the first call of application of the new system there was 200,000 EUR for all documentaries; there are supposed to be 3 calls in a year, but still, it`s not enough. It's also a pity that there are no regional funds to support films connected to a specific region.

    6. Which producer is your inspiration and ideal?

We are almost the same generation, but he happened to be my teacher at the FAMU – Petr Oukropec from the company Negativ. I'm trying to follow his ideal of producing good art house films and earning money with it, organising beautiful local cultural activities in his home village and living a nice family life.
