Oscar Nominations for Polish, Estonian and Georgian Films

    LOS ANGELES: Nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards were announced on 15 January 2015. Ida by Paweł Pawlikowski was nominated in two categories, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. Two Polish short documentaries, Joanna by Aneta Kopacz and Our Curse by Tomasz Śliwiński, received nominations in the Best Short Subject category. Polish costume designer Anna Biedrzycka-Sheppard (Maleficent) was nominated for Best Costumes.

    Ida, a Golden Globe and EFA nominated Danish/Polish coproduction, was sold to over 30 countries including USA, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Czech Republic and Denmark. The film was produced by Phoenix Film (DK) and Opus Film (PL) in association with Portobello Pictures (GB). Ida's DoP, Łukasz Żal nominated for Best Cinematography, also shot Joanna.

    Estonian/Georgian coproduction Tangerines by Zaza Urusadze, which participated in eighteen international film festivals and won numerous awards, was also nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film was produced by Allfilm and Cinema 24 in Georgia.

    Aneta Kopacz's Joanna follows a young woman dying of cancer and wanting to celebrate her life and her son in the time she has left. The film was produced by Wajda Studio in coproduction with the National Audiovisual Institute and was co-financedby the Polish Film Institute.

    Tomasz Śliwiński's Our Curse is a moving story focused on the director's family and their struggle with their son's illness called the Ondine's curse. The film was produced by Warsaw Film School.

    The official gala will take placein Los Angeles on 22 February 2015.
