FNE at CentEast Warsaw: Zornitsa Sophia in Postproduction with Voevoda

By

WARSAW: Bulgarian director and producer Zornitsa Sophia showcased her new project Voevoda, a drama about a 19th century female gang leader, at the 2015 CentEast Warsaw Works In Progress event.

The main character Roumena (played by the director) is forced to become the leader of a gang of rebels and face the brutality of her new life. She tries to mix the harsh responsibilities of being a chieftain and a mother. The film takes place in the 19th century but is imagined as a reflection of the condition of contemporary women struggling to merge several roles at once.

"The film is a coproduction of MQ PICTURES EOOD with Dream Team Films and the American owned Nu Boyana and the Swedish owned Nova TV, all of them Bulgarian companies. We are still in negotiations with two minor partners, trying to find the gap financing for the last stages of post-production: cgi, color grading, sound mixing and DCP production," the director told FNE at CentEast Warsaw.

The budget of the film is 1 m EUR and the project received financing from the Bulgarian National Film Center as well as the National Palace of Culture in Bulgaria. The sales agent is Millenium Films.

"Our company has reserved  the territories of Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Croatia, for which we are looking for distributors," the director told FNE.

The film was shot in October 2015 in Bulgaria, on location in a preserved, original 19th century village. The film is currently in post-production with the end of production planned for May 2016.
