At the special gala celebrating his 90th birthday, which took place in Warsaw on 5 March 2016, the director met with his closest co-workers and friends as well as representatives of the Polish film community. He also received the first Gold Badge of The Polish Filmmakers Association. "We constantly need to defend what we already fought for and won for the Polish cinema", said Jacek Bromski, Director of SFP. "In 2016 we celebrate 50 years of the association and we decided to create the Gold Badge and present the first one to our honorary President Andrzej Wajda, wishing him next 50 years with us", Bromski also said.
The National Audiovisual Institute celebrates the anniversary with a retrospective of Wajda's films entitled Wajdart, including Wedding (TVP), Man Of Iron (Zespół Filmowy X) and Promised Land (Zespół filmowy X), accompanied with a multimedia exhibition of Wajda's graphic works curated by Antoni Rodowicz.
Special screenings of Wajda's films also took place in the Warsaw cinema Kultura from 3 to 6 March 2016. The Krakow Film Festival is organizing the Wajda in Documentary retrospective with both works about the director including On Set (WFDIF) by Jerzy Ziarnik and Pan...Dziad z Lirą (Czołówka) by Sławomir Idziak and Andrzej Kotowski, as well as his own documentary films like the controversial Wróblewski According To Wajda (Manggha).
The Museum of Cinematography in Łódź opened a special exhibition of international posters of Andrzej Wajda's films including works of Roman Cieślewicz, Wojciech Zamecznik, Wojciech Fangor, Franciszek Starowieyski, Wiktor Górka, Waldemar Świerzy, Jan Lenica as well as the international artists Peter Strausfeld, Alain Lynch, Dominique Guillotin and Otto Kummert.
The Suwałki Culture Center is showcasing a collection of Wajda's drawings accompanied by a retrospective of his documentaries. ICE KRAKÓW Congress Centre organized a special concert of music composed for Wajda's films, including pieces by Wojciech Kilar, Krzysztof Komeda, Andrzej Korzyński, Paweł Mykietyn, Krzysztof Penderecki and Andrzej Markowski, on 6 March 2016.
Wajda School, created by Andrzej Wajda together with Wojciech Marczewski in 2001, launched a video project collecting wishes from schools graduates, professors and collaborators. The wishes are showcased at www.wajda90.com website and include videos from Paweł Pawlikowski, Marcel Łoziński, Bartosz Konopka, Bodo Kox, Aneta Kopacz, Andrzej Saramonowicz as well as a special video from Meryl Streep and Małgorzata Szumowska that went viral in Poland and reached over 80,000 viewers in one day.
