OPEN LETTER to TVP President Jacek Kurski and TVP2 Director Maciej Chmiel

Dear Sir, The Guild of Polish Directors wants to express outrage over the material broadcast as an introduction to the film Ida directed by Paweł Pawlikowski presented on TVP2 on 25 February 2016.

For the first time in the 25-year history of the free public media in Poland, a film was branded with an ideological interpretation, presenting the viewer not with the film's story or artistic value, but forcing on him one, rightful interpretation.

It surprised us, that among the guests invited by TVP2 only one, Krzysztof Kłopotowski, is working with cinema professionally. The rest, Piotr Gursztyn of TVP Historia and Maciej Świrski of Polish Anti-Defamation league have no competence and authority that would allow them to be cast in the role of art commentators. Their mainly negative and arrogant comments such us "You can't force catharsis despite the nation" only revealed their lack of competence.

We find that TVP committed gross manipulation with this programme. Not only by reading only one layer of the film in an ideological way, presenting its content untruthfully. But also by presenting the charts before the film that the Polish Anti-Defamation League advocated for last year. The cinema distributors did not give their consent to add these charts to the film, guarding the irrefutable right of the director to have the last word on the final form of his work.

These actions are proof of lack of respect to the makers of the film and also to the viewers, who were stripped of the possibility of interpreting this work of art on their own. It also demonstrates the lack of the broadcaster's faith in the viewers’ sensitivity and intelligence, breaking with good customs and a vivid example of the manipulative propaganda practices that escape any standards of democratic media.

Ida was presented on TVP2 in a bias and harmful way. It causes our distaste, our protest and our suspicion that forcing an interpretation of the film before it is screened will become a Telewizja Polska practice. This is a clear road to censorship of art and a bad change that will bring Telewizja Polska back to the times of PRL, times that we thought were gone for good.
