WARSAW: Polish film director Agnieszka Holland was given the Kosciuszko Foundation’s Pioneer Award at a gala ceremony held in the US.

The award was in recognition of her place in promoting Polish culture internationally. Holland has received three Oscar nominations and has been associated with films that deal with important historical and moral issues in Central Europe.

Receiving the award, Holland said, “I know what it is to be an émigré Pole and how difficult it is to find the proper balance of things, preserving the Polish identity while being at the same time a citizen of a country of residence.”
