Foreign films which entered the country illegally were very popular among the Romanians, at a time when public television was broadcasting only two hours a day and the entertainment was strictly controlled by the regime. One of the people interviewed in the film is Irina Margareta Nistor, who translated and dubbed more than 5,000 films distributed on the black market.
Chuck Norris vs Communism (www.chucknorrisvscommunism.co.uk ) is produced by Mara Adina and Dara Carroll together with the British Vernon Films Ltd (www.vernonfilms.co.uk), in co-production with Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and the Romanian 4Proof Films (www.4prooffilm.ro). The budget is 144, 679 Euro (£120,000), Călugăreanu told FNE. Jose Ruiz is the DOP and Nandita Jain the animator. Violonist Alexander Balanescu will compose the score.
"The first phase of shooting finished in Bucharest after a month of interviewing people and exploring locations. Shooting will continue troughout 2012," Călugăreanu told FNE. Postproduction will be in London, with the premiere set for spring 2013.
