PORTOROŽ: Slobodan Maksimović’s Nika, a teen family drama about a 16-year-old go-cart driver who wins the most important race of her life, will be screened in the competition of the 19th Slovenian Film Festival in Portorož (13-18 September 2016).
Nika loves racing go-carts. Her father, a professional race car driver, who died in a car accident, had inspired her love for this sport. Nika’s mother is afraid that after the death of her husband she could lose her only daughter as well. However, her opposition only fuels Nika’s efforts.
The main character is played by newcomer Ylenia Mahnič, joining professional actors Marjuta Slamič, Sebastian Cavazza, Gašper Tič and Gojmir Lešnjak. Shooting took place on the Slovenian coast (Koper, Izola, Piran, Sečovlje) in May-June 2015.
The film was produced by Darko Vinkl, Alan Vitezič, Bistra Borak and Miha Hočevar through Nora Production Group in coproduction with RTV Slovenija. The total budget is 750,000 EUR. The project was supported by the Slovenian Film Center with 150,000 EUR. Technical support was provided by FS Viba.
The Cinemania Group will release the film domestically on 6 October 2016.
Born in Sarajevo, Slobodan Maksimović studied film and television at the AGRFT. His debut feature Thanks for Sunderland (2012, Radiotelevizija Slovenija) won the Vesna Award for Best Film at the 15th Slovenian Film Festival in 2012.
